Introduction to Geology Chapter 2 – Basic Geologic Principles The science of geology is founded on basic principles that are useful for making observations about the world around us. This chapter presents a mix of information that is essential fundamental to all following chapters. This chapter is an introduction to rocks and minerals, and the rock cycle. Basic chemistry is important to all sciences, especially geology! Everything around us is made of chemical compounds that have testable and identifying characteristics, allowing them to be classified, and their age determined. This is what archaeologists use to determine the age of human-made artifacts. But carbon dating won’t work on dinosaur bones. The half-life of carbon is only 5, years, so carbon dating is only effective on samples that are less than 50, years old. Dinosaur bones, on the other hand, are millions of years old — some fossils are billions of years old.
To determine the ages of these specimens, scientists need an isotope with a very long half-life. Scientific measurements such as radiometric dating use the natural radioactivity of certain elements found in rocks to help determine their age.
