Nov 3, I’ve had very similar thoughts about the whole Matchmaking thing in the Destiny series, and I thought I’d chime in with some ideas that I’ve observed over time as Destiny has evolved. I come from a very heavy MMO background as well so the idea of the game not having chat or an LFG system built into the game was baffling to me and a huge deterrent for me enjoying the game during Year 1. Over time, as I played the game more and actually got more invested in it, I started to try to understand the why behind certain decisions when it comes to matchmaking. Some of the decisions they make downright make the game more frustrating for a player, especially on PC. However, as you mentioned in the OP, it does line up with their philosophy of what Destiny should be like. This presents unique challenges as there are some positives that come from the situation they have made as well as the negatives I’m sure many of us have all encountered. The main thing that sticks out to me is that having the player leave their comfort zone somewhat to gain passage into doing a harder activity can lead to bolstering the community as a whole. An example of this could be the original DestinyGAF community. When people realized they couldn’t do the Weekly Heroic Strikes with matchmaking, the first thing they did was jump online and meet some people that they could try it with. There was a lot of failures, but when the successes happened, those players tended to stick together.

A big staple in BioWare games in the past such as the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series is that beautiful stories crafted in a way that throws the player all in. These branching narratives is what BioWare is known for but Anthem is shaking things up in more way than one. Luckily for those wanting to enjoy the online aspects but don’t have a steady group of friends to enjoy the co-op option, BioWare has confirmed that matchmaking will be available at launch for all content.

Much of the story can be done solo but there are certain in-game events available to earn higher level gear that does require four people. For those that don’t have a squad, matchmaking will be available so no one has to miss out on any part of the game. This is also applicable to generic quests and other undisclosed content options as well.

As confirmed in this article, there will be no matchmaking for raids. Personally I feel that this is a pretty poor decision. Personally I feel that this is a pretty poor decision. I have plenty of friends to play with personally, but I’m sure there will be a large percentage of players essentially cut off from this content.

I was looking forward to an enjoyable time shooting monsters, which seemed like a fair expectation from Bungie, the creators of Halo. After a month of endless repetition, an overcomplicated leveling system and practically non-existent storytelling, I called it quits and moved on to better things like Alien: Isolation and Call of Duty: However, Destiny has had a remarkable amount of staying power, building a community obsessed with what they promise is enthralling lore and the loot hunt at the heart of the game.

I decided to give Destiny another shot last month, with only a few weeks left to go until The Taken King, a hotly anticipated expansion pack that came out today. One of my goals was to finish leveling my main character from last year.

Destiny Matchmaking Is Viable

Well, in Destiny’s 6-player raids that won’t even be an option. For better or worse. Everybody hates co-oping with randoms, right? For better or worse, Bungie has decided to make it so that there is no matchmaking with strangers in that mode.

The raids are one of the most popular game modes by followers of Destiny in the ultimate cooperative challenge because it forces the six members of the squad to work together and combine their skills to overcome puzzles, areas of platforms and powerful bosses.

No new raid though. This might make some people angry. Because I hardly ever play raids. Online multiplayer and matchmaking algorithms have been a staple of multiplayer gaming ever since Blizzard invented Battle. Missions that are nearly impossible to complete alone. Missions that, by definition, require a team to defeat. Oh… and good luck getting past level 28ish without playing any of those.

We solved this problem when the internet looked like this. They require planning, strategy, and teamwork. This—you may realize if you have half a brain—results in strangers who have never met nor played before playing raids; which you may recognize as the exact thing Bungie wanted to avoid. And you know what? People compete in those raids all the time and have fun! There are puzzles to be solved, difficult terrain to cross, enemies that require synchronized attacks to defeat, etc.

During the first gameplay reveal in Los Angeles yesterday , Bungie executives took the stage to outline the substantial quality of life improvements the sequel will introduce to make this happen. From removing the need to load in and out of one area for different activities to letting players more easily group up with strangers, Bungie is going to great lengths to paint its new installment as a more thoughtful, well-meaning, and accessible video game.

On top of the grind of daily play and the ever-increasing amount of items to collect, Destiny was hobbled by befuddling design choices and maddening technical constraints. Players complained endlessly about not having enough space for all their gear and weapons, the lack of narrative and cinematic direction, and an almost Kafkaesque progression system. Destiny spent its first year looking like an extended beta , as Bungie tweaked and changed it constantly in response to player feedback.

The most recent confirmation of this news comes from Mark Darrah on Twitter when one fan asked “will Anthem’s version of raids have matchmaking?” Darrah said yes, which really comes as no.

If you can’t do that, then you might as well not even have a multiplayer component. Yet every year we see AAA titles release that fail to adequately master this part of the equation. You could really only get into a matchmaking queue for strikes and the Crucible. Everything else in the game required you to go onto one of the “looking-for-group” websites or apps and roll the dice. While fans banding together to support a title is commendable, it’s not okay that much of the time this was the only way to actually play the game.

Well, that’s too bad because there were practically no people looking to do the same thing. Even if you wanted to do the more popular Raids or Lighthouse runs, the stipulations people put on joining their group became ridiculous. Since obtaining Gjallarhorn is completely RNG based your inclusion on a team could easily be left up to pure luck. Bungie made a big deal about Guided Games during their reveal stream on May 18th.

Bungie Isn’t Planning on Adding Raid Matchmaking to Destiny GO The developers are considering having some sort of looking at group functionality, but sometime in the distant future Dec 4, Bungie has confirmed yet again that there are currently no plans to bring raid matchmaking to its sci-fi first-person shooter, Destiny.

The way this currently works, you can’t really enjoy some of the game’s end content unless you have a couple of friends with you. Destiny’s raids take six people to complete, and you can only invite gamers on your friends list to join you in attempting to take down its bosses and — with a bit of luck — get mad loot. Other games that feature such adventurous pieces of content, requiring that multiple people band together and work in unison for the greater good, have long since implemented methods for gamers to enjoy everything with perfect strangers.

World of Warcraft, the most notorious massively multiplayer online role-playing game, even went as far as to implement raid finders where you can assemble motley crews of adventurers, in order to streamline the process of taking down its meanest dragons. Developer Bungie, however, has no such plans, at least not for the foreseeable future, as it believes that the sense of community is stronger and the action more satisfying, when you can’t simply pick up random people to go through content with.

You still need friends for raids, but not necessarily real ones Speaking to GameInformer , Luke Smith, Destiny’s lead designer, explained why Bungie didn’t add the feature to begin with. He started by pointing out that instead of changing the raid-design philosophy in order to accommodate matchmaking, the team wanted to create content and elicit emotions from players in a more meaningful way.

He also noted that the development team was very enthusiastic about the emerging community-driven websites that help individual players link up with one another, that basically function the same as a matchmaking system would, only with a bit more hassle.

Bungie cancels matchmaking for Destiny Raid

Helping gamers rage less and enjoy their games more. With a few weeks since my last heavy dose of Destiny I have found the grind to be a bit more entertaining and fresh. Who I ended up playing with, however, was a very different experience than when I first ventured into the Destiny universe.

One of the most unusual features of the original Destiny was that it lacked a matchmaking system for high-level content, like raids and Nightfall missions. With Destiny 2, Bungie hopes to open up.

Calus Challenge Prestige Mode: Enemy Health and Damage – All enemies now deal increased damage and can also take more punishment too. Even smaller foes like Psions can hit you hard and every enemy will require a few extra shots to go down. Revive Tokens – These now work similarly to Trials of the Nine. If a player revives an ally, both parties will lose their tokens.

Power Level – There is no power level increase for the Prestige raid. Prestige Gear Rewards – As there is no power level increase, Prestige gear will remain the same as normal, albeit with a purple glow and a different default shader. Normal Gear Rewards – There are no normal mode drops regardless of completion. Calus Tokens – The tokens you earn in the Prestige raid will not unlock Prestige gear if redeemed with Benedict No Locked Loadouts – This is pretty self explanatory.

You can change your equipment on the fly in the Prestige raid. Every Encounter Change Almost every major encounter in the Leviathan has been altered to make it trickier. This player must go to the designated plate to continue the encounter.
